Kimberly D. Matthews, MLS, MBA

Ms. Matthews is currently the Assistant Director of the Miami-Dade Public Library System - the 7th largest public library system in the U.S. – overseeing Library Operations for 50 Locations. MDPLS has over 500 employees and annual budget of approximately $76M. Previously for over seven years as Executive Director, Trenton (NJ) Free Public Library, she led that library system through two downsizings due to budget cuts of nearly 50%. She reengineered all internal processes for increased fiscal responsibility and economy of resources, and implemented new policies for all areas of service and operation. Kimberly has also served as a board member of LYRASIS, and the Central NJ Regional Library Cooperative. She earned her MLS from Emporia State University in 1994, and later earned an MBA from University of Phoenix.  Her library career has included positions in all types of libraries, and she gained unique experiences with the Smithsonian, NASA, Washington State University, and several public library systems. Before Trenton, Kimberly spent nearly a decade as branch manager and manager of Technical Services Department of the award winning Salt Lake City Public Library where her numerous responsibilities included Planning Committee Chairperson that crafted SLCPL's ground-breaking 2007-2009 Strategic Plan. Kimberly and Steve co-authored Crash Course in Strategic Planning  published in August 2013 by Libraries Unlimited.  She is now author of 21st Century Library Blog, which garnered her the keynote speaking engagement at the Danish Union of Librarians 2014 Annual Conference in Copenhagen.

Stephen A. Matthews, MSSM, MLS, PhD 

Dr. Matthews was a Rural Library Consultant at the Utah State Library between 2007 and 2015 where he consulted with a dozen small and rural library staff and boards. He established a distance learning program for the state library, and was instrumental in guiding the library during its 2012 development of a new Strategic Plan.  Steve earned his PhD in Adult, Occupational and Continuing Education from Kansas State University in 1991, and his Master of Library Science at Emporia State University in 1996. His first masters degree is in Systems Management from University of Southern California. After a career as a U.S. Army officer, aviator and logistician, Steve's next career included positions as Director of Training Development for NASA's TATCA Program, a business college dean, and director of research for a private foundation. In Kansas, he owned Matthews Education Consulting where he provided consulting, designed training in education technology, and developed technology-based educational products for the local public school district. 21st Century Librarianship has been his passion since 2010, and he is the founder, and now occasional contributor to 21st Century Library Blog. Steve and Kimberly co-authored Crash Course in Strategic Planning published in August 2013 by Libraries Unlimited.
